Overview of the proposals

As Wales moves towards a lower-carbon more energy secure future, Green GEN Cymru is developing the electricity infrastructure needed to connect renewable energy generation to the wider network. This will help ensure homes, businesses, farms and communities can benefit from a secure and sustainable supply of homegrown energy.

Towy Usk is a proposed 132kV electricity connection, approximately 98 kilometres in length, that would connect between the proposed Nant Mithil Energy Park in Powys and a new National Grid connection point near Llandyfaelog, Carmarthenshire.

As electricity demand grows across Wales, the project would add much-needed capacity to the network, helping connect renewable energy generation and support a more secure, sustainable supply of clean, home-grown electricity.

Your feedback: Helping shape the Project

Thank you to everyone who has taken part in the Towy Usk Grid Connection Project so far. Your feedback, local knowledge and insights have played an important role in helping us develop and refine our proposals.

Since our last consultation in Spring 2024, the Project has evolved significantly through continued engagement, environmental assessment and engineering design development. The proposals presented in this consultation reflect how feedback and ongoing assessment work have helped shape the Project.

We are once again seeking your views on our updated proposals to help inform the next stage of Project development.

Our revised proposals – Autumn 2026

Guided by consultation feedback, local knowledge and further environmental, technical and engineering studies, we have updated our proposals.

This latest stage of consultation includes a number of key developments since Spring 2024, and we are seeking your feedback on:

  • An updated Draft Route Alignment - Autumn 2026
  • A new monopole design proposed across Sections 2 to 5
  • A revised switching station location. Moving from Section 1 to Section 4
  • An extended underground cable section within Section 5
  • Proposed temporary access areas and compounds required during construction.

We welcome your views on the Draft Route Alignment – Autumn 2026.

Your feedback continues to play an important role in shaping the Project. We invite you to view the proposed changes and share your detailed views.

What we are consulting on in this consultation – Autumn 2026

Building on what we’ve heard: Refining the project together.

This consultation is open from Tuesday 6 October to Tuesday 24 November 2026.

The proposals presented in this consultation are our most developed proposals to date, but the Project remains open to influence. We want to hear about local issues, opportunities, constraints and mitigation measures that may not yet have been identified.

Your feedback can help us further refine the route, construction access arrangements and other aspects of the proposals ahead of future statutory consultation.

We are seeking feedback on: The Draft Route Alignment – Autumn 2026, including:

  • Approximately 92 km of overhead line and the proposed locations of wood poles and monopoles, a new structure type proposed along much of the route.
  • Proposed temporary access areas and compounds required during construction.
  • The proposed switching station site in Section 4, located to the north-east of Llanwrda.
  • 6 km of underground cable in Section 5, including crossings beneath the A40, the River Towy, the B4300 and the B4310.
  • Any issues, opportunities or considerations that should be considered as the Project continues to be developed.
  • Your experience of the consultation process and the information we have made available.

Local knowledge and detailed feedback can make a real difference

  • Your local knowledge and feedback can help us further develop and refine our proposals. Please tell us about any changes you think could be made to improve the proposals or reduce potential impacts and, importantly, explain why.
  • This feedback form is a guide only. You can answer any or all the questions or provide comments on the aspects of the Project that are of most interest or relevance to you. If you would prefer, you can submit your feedback separately by letter or email.
  • The more detail you can provide, the better. We encourage you to provide as much information as possible to help us fully understand and consider your feedback.

Supporting information can be particularly helpful, including:
    • Photographs
    • Marked-up maps
    • Plans and drawings
    • Relevant documents
    • What3words references.

When providing comments, please use the Interactive Map on our website, or the maps included in the Consultation Brochure, to identify specific locations and, where relevant, wood pole, monopole or other infrastructure reference numbers. This will help us accurately identify the locations you are referring to and fully consider your feedback.
  • Please ensure your feedback relates to the Project and its potential effects. We are unable to consider views on wider matters such as energy generation, government policy or the emerging National Energy Strategy.

Why your feedback matters

  • Feedback received through previous consultations has helped shape the proposals presented today.
  • The Draft Route Alignment – Autumn 2026 represents our most developed proposals to date, but they remain open to influence.
  • Feedback received during this consultation will help inform the next phase of design development ahead of statutory consultation in 2027.
  • We will consider your comments alongside ongoing environmental assessments, technical studies and engineering design work as the Project continues to evolve.

How we will use your feedback

We will use your feedback to help review and refine our proposals as the Project continues to develop.

The Project is being developed through the Significant Infrastructure Project (SIP) process, under the Infrastructure (Wales) Act 2024 and associated Regulations. Feedback from this consultation will help inform the ongoing development of the proposals before a future Infrastructure Consent Order (ICO) application is submitted.

Feedback received from communities, local authorities, community councils and other stakeholders will help inform the next stage of design development, alongside ongoing environmental, technical and engineering assessments and environmental surveys.

Before we submit an ICO application, there will be a statutory Pre-Application Consultation (PAC), expected to take place in 2027, providing a further opportunity to review and comment on the detailed proposals and the draft Environmental Statement.
